Sharjah is the third-most populous metropolis in the United Arab Emirates after Dubai and Abu Dhabi to form part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. It is the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah.
The town of Sharjah overlooks the Persian Gulf and has a population of over 800,000. It consists of the main administrative and commercial centres with a range of cultural and traditional projects, including several museums covering such areas as archaeology, natural history, science, art, heritage, Islamic art and culture. Sharjah is understood for its Arabic and Islamic architecture, in addition to its libraries, Islamic museums and cultural centres. The city is known as the cultural and literary centre of the United Arab Emirates.
